Under the Floodlights: 3rd Annual OT6s

Our OT6s Touch Rugby Tournament Unites Local and International Teams in Electric Night of Sport at The Sultan’s School

What a weekend of rugby
What a weekend of rugby

Muscat, Oman – April 11, 2025

In a spectacular display of athleticism, sportsmanship, and community spirit, the OT6s Touch Rugby Tournament returned for its third edition and delivered its most dynamic experience yet. Held at the prestigious Sultan’s School in Seeb, this year’s event drew 140 players across 10 teams from around Oman, the Gulf, and beyond — and for the first time ever, extended into the evening under dazzling floodlights.

From first kickoff to the final whistle, the tournament was a true celebration of rugby values — Discipline, Respect, Inclusivity, Passions, Solidarity; delivered through the fast-paced, inclusive format of Touch Rugby. With matches taking place on what many players described as “the best grass pitch we’ve ever played on,” the OT6s once again cemented itself as a cornerstone event in Oman Rugby’s calendar.

A Truly International Affair

This year’s OT6s didn’t just raise the bar — it expanded the boundaries. In addition to a strong contingent of local Muscat-based teams, the competition welcomed international flair with the arrival of five traveling squads:

  • Two teams from the UK Royal Navy’s HMS Lancaster, docked in Oman and keen to compete

  • A spirited team from the UAE, featuring a blend of expats and emerging Gulf talent

  • A dedicated squad from Saudi Arabia, eager to build on revious results

  • A representative team from Salalah, making the journey to highlight the growing rugby community in southern Oman

  • An all Omani team from the Sharqiyah region, adding depth and diversity to the national touch scene

Joining them were four Muscat-based teams, each bringing their own flair, fanbase, and fierce determination to claim the OT6s crown.

High-Tempo Action Meets Community Energy

Touch Rugby, a format known for its rapid pace and minimal contact, was on full display through the tournament’s 6-a-side structure. Games were short, intense, and thrilling to watch — a perfect recipe for spectators of all ages.

But while the competition was fierce, it was the spirit of community that elevated the event. The sidelines were lined with cheering friends, families, and rugby newcomers, many of whom were attending their first-ever tournament. The blend of nationalities, playing backgrounds, and experiences fostered a warm, welcoming environment that reminded all why rugby continues to grow in Oman.

Night Rugby Debut a Game-Changer

In what proved to be a game-changing innovation, the 2025 OT6s featured night-time play for the first time. Thanks to temporary floodlight installations sponsored by OHI Douglas, the tournament extended into the cooler evening hours — a practical and atmospheric decision that was met with overwhelming praise.

The shift not only allowed for peak performance by reducing the impact of daytime heat, but it also created a visually stunning spectacle. The floodlights bathed the pitch in a glow that added intensity and theatre to each try, pass, and dive. Players commented on how energizing the experience was, with some saying they felt like they were playing on a bigger stage.

For organisers, the success of the night setup opens exciting doors for future editions and even mid-week rugby development matches.

More Than a Tournament – A Statement of Growth

Now in its third year, the OT6s continues to showcase the ambition and upward trajectory of Oman Rugby. From humble beginnings in 2022, the event has grown steadily — both in scale and significance.

“It’s more than just a tournament,” said Brian Hopkins, Head of Rugby for Oman Rugby. “It’s a chance to bring people together, to promote the sport we love, and to inspire a new generation of players across Oman. The presence of teams from Salalah to Saudi Arabia proves we’re building something real, something meanful.”

For many new fans and youth players in attendance, this event was their first exposure to live rugby. The hope is that experiences like these will spark greater grassroots participation, school programs, and year-round development.

Looking Ahead

With the success of the 2025 OT6s, Oman Rugby is already looking to expand the event in 2026 - the potential for schools and grassroots centres to come together is a key milestone

Each addition aims to turn OT6s into not just a rugby tournament, but a festival of sport and culture, accessible to all.

Closing Whistle

As the final try was scored and the last high-five exchanged under the stars, one thing was clear — the OT6s isn’t just growing the game in Oman. It’s redefining what rugby can look like in the region: inclusive, exciting, and deeply rooted in community.

From the green grass of The Sultan’s School to the proud jerseys of sailors and Saudis alike, this year’s event proved that Oman Rugby is charging forward — and everyone is invited to join the journey.
