Oman plays Rugby - And they qualified for the World Cup 2024!

Did you know that Oman's Rugby Team Makes History by Qualifying for Touch Rugby World Cup in England? 

In a groundbreaking achievement for the Sultanate of Oman, the country's touch rugby team has secured a spot in the upcoming Touch Rugby World Cup in England this year. This marks the first time that Oman will be represented on the global stage in touch rugby, showcasing the talent and determination of the team. 

The qualification comes after 2 years of hard work to establish the team and set the sights on showcasing the athleticism that Oman has to offer in sport. With their sights set on July, the team is now gearing up for the challenge of facing some of the best touch rugby teams from around the world. And it will not be a small task.

Oman Rugby hosted a celebration event on Wednesday 24th April at the Kempinski hotel Al Mouj to announce the achievement and to set the scene on what this means for the team and Oman

Chairman of Oman rugby, Nabil Riyadh Al Busaidi, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to compete on the world stage, saying, "This is a dream come true for all of us. Rugby has been in the Sultanate for 50 years but mainly as a small expat and social sport. Since 2021 we have established the Oman Rugby Committee and only last year 2023 we established our high performance team. We have worked hard to get to this point and we are ready to show the world what we can do. The work is not done yet, the squad has to be decided and that will be a big task and we have to gain financial support in order to get to the event."

Coach Brian Hopkins had this to say about the team: “Having only brought high performance rugby to the Sultanate last year we had an uphill task and the players have worked hard to ensure we promote Oman in the light it deserves. We have committed to achieve 50% of the squad to be Omani and I am delighted to say we will achieve this. The combination of rugby experience with the expats and the athleticism of the Omani players brings about a unique blend to our team makeup. I am excited for the World Cup.”

The Touch Rugby World Cup is set to take place in England later this year, with teams from over 40 countries expected to participate across 18 divisions. Oman's qualification is a testament to the growing popularity and success of rugby in the country, and serves as a source of pride for all Omani’s. Oman have qualified in the Mens open division and will face off against 19 other teams. The squad of 16 players and 6 staff will travel for a total of 10 days to represent Oman.

As the team prepares to represent Oman on the global stage, they are calling for support to aid them fulfill the dream from corporations across the Sultanate.

عُمان تلعب الرغبي - وتأهلوا لكأس العالم 2024!

هل تعلم أن فريق الرغبي العماني يصنع التاريخ بالتأهل لكأس العالم للرغبي في إنجلترا؟

في إنجاز مبهر لسلطنة عُمان، نجح فريق الرغبي باللمس في البلاد في تأمين مكان في كأس العالم للرغبي باللمس في إنجلترا هذا العام. ويمثل هذا المرة الأولى التي ستُمثل فيها عُمان على المستوى العالمي في رياضة الرغبي باللمس، حيث يبرز موهبة وعزيمة الفريق.

جاء التأهل بعد عامين من العمل الشاق لإنشاء الفريق وتحديد الأهداف لعرض القدرات الرياضية التي تقدمها عُمان في الرياضة. وبتوجيهاتهم نحو شهر يوليو، يستعد الفريق الآن لمواجهة تحدي مواجهة بعض من أفضل فرق الرغبي باللمس في العالم. ولن يكون ذلك مهمة سهلة.

استضافت الرغبي عمان حدث احتفالي يوم الأربعاء 24 أبريل في فندق كمبينسكي الموج للإعلان عن الإنجاز ووضع الحدث لما يعنيه ذلك للفريق ولعُمان.

عبر رئيس الرغبي عمان، نبيل رياض البوسعيدي، عن حماسه للفرصة للمنافسة على المستوى العالمي، قائلاً: "هذا حلم تحقق لنا جميعًا. كان الرغبي موجودًا في السلطنة لمدة 50 عامًا ولكن بشكل رئيسي كرياضة صغيرة للمقيمين الأجانب والاجتماعية. منذ عام 2021 أنشأنا لجنة الرغبي عمان وفقط العام الماضي 2023 أنشأنا فريق الأداء العالي لدينا. لقد عملنا بجد للوصول إلى هذه النقطة ونحن جاهزون لإظهار للعالم ما يمكننا فعله. العمل لم ينته بعد، يجب تحديد التشكيلة وسيكون ذلك مهمة كبيرة وعلينا الحصول على دعم مالي من أجل الوصول إلى الحدث."

قال المدرب برايان هوبكنز ما يلي عن الفريق: "بعد أن جلبنا الرغبي عالي الأداء إلى السلطنة العام الماضي، كان لدينا مهمة صعبة وعمل اللاعبون بجد لضمان تعزيز مكانة عُمان بالشكل الذي تستحقه. لقد التزمنا بتحقيق 50% من التشكيلة لتكون عُمانية، وأنا سعيد للقول إننا سنحقق هذا. يجمع تجربة الرغبي مع المقيمين الأجانب والقدرات الرياضية للاعبين العمانيين عنصرًا فريدًا في تشكيلة فريقنا. أنا متحمس لكأس العالم."

كأس العالم للرغبي باللمس مقرر أن يقام في إنجلترا في وقت لاحق هذا العام، حيث من المتوقع مشاركة فرق من أكثر من 40 دولة عبر 18 فئة. تأهل عُمان يشكل دليلا على الشعبية المتزايدة ونجاح الرغبي في البلاد، ويعتبر مصدر فخر لجميع العمانيين. تأهلت عُمان في فئة الرجال المفتوحة وستواجه 19 فريقًا آخر. سيسافر فريق يضم 16 لاعبًا و6 موظفين لمدة 10 أيام لتمثيل عُمان.

بينما يستعد الفريق لتمثيل عُمان على المستوى العالمي، يطلبون الدعم لمساعدتهم على تحقيق الحلم من الشركات في جميع أنحاء السلطنة.
